Can You Use Clean Fuel Made Locally In Hawai’i?
See what kind of vehicles can use clean fuel to protect Hawaii's environment while making us more energy independent.
Gasoline Engine
Yes, all vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2001 have been certified by the E.P.A. as clean fuel or flex fuel capable and will have no difficulty running on less polluting fuels.
Diesel Engines
Many people who drive diesel cars aren’t aware that the fuel they are putting in their vehicles already has a
biofuel blend.
Hybrid Vehicles
Yes, all vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2001 have been certified by the E.P.A. as clean fuel or flex fuel capable and will have no difficulty running on less polluting fuels.
Trucks & Farm Equipment
Trucks
Most major engine companies have stated formally that the use of blends up to B20 will not void their parts and workmanship warranties.
Fleets
Companies that own fleets of trucks can meet emissions reduction targets demanded by their customers and shareholders.
Farm Equipment
Your diesel farm equipment and heavy equipment can use renewable diesel or biodiesel. And every major truck and heavy equipment manufacturer support, certify and warranty
at least a B20 through B99 standards for biodiesel and renewable diesel.
School Buses
Children shouldn’t have to inhale diesel fumes on their way to school. Plans are underway to replace old buses with hydrogen and electricity, but that could take years. Clean fuels could reduce the harm to our keiki today.
Public Transportation
Buses on all of our islands run on dirty diesel, and it will take years to electrify them or run them on hydrogen. Clean fuel gets you where you need to go without all of the fumes.
Water Vessels
Fishing Boats
Any fishing boat currently using diesel fuel can transition to renewable diesel fuel for cleaner air without any loss in performance.
Container Ships
The 'bunker fuel' currently used by container ships is toxic to the ship's crew and Port workers loading and unloading cargo. Because Hawai'i imports most of our basic needs from overseas, switching to renewable diesel would dramatically improve respiratory health of communities closest to Port operations.
Cruise Ships
Cruise ships idling in our Port are burning dirty diesel, which is harmful to human health. That's why earlier this year, Royal Caribbean began fueling their ships with renewable diesel as part of their strategy to reduce pollution.
